Description of organization

Fundació Clínic per a la Recerca Biomèdica (FCRB) was created to manage the research activities of Hospital Clínic i Provincial de Barcelona (HCPB), a third party to FCRB. Hospital Clínic is a leading Spanish center for medical research. The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychology (headed by Dr. Josefina Castro-Fornieles) is specialized in top-level clinical care and research in psychiatric disorders such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar disorders, Eating Disorders, Obsessive-compulsive disorder and Substance Abuse Disorders. Research projects comprise clinical, pharmacological, neuropsychological and neuroimaging aspects. Research into the efficacy and safety of medication treatment for psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents is on the priority list.  The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychology has about 1000 new patients per year. The staff of the team includes a total of 14 child and adolescent psychiatrists and 12 clinical psychologists. The center has inpatient (with 22 beds), day hospital and outpatient units.

Previous experience

The center has been involved in collaborative national studies (Castro-Fornieles et al., 2007; 2008) about psychosis and antipsychotic treatment in children and adolescents. Several members have been Principle Investigator of other collaborative research projects related to side effects of antipsychotics in children and the study of offspring of schizophrenic and bipolar disorder patients.

Profile of staff members

Josefina Castro-Fornieles (MD, PhD) is a child and adolescent psychiatrist, and associated professor of Psychiatry (Barcelona University), and Head of the Department of Child and Adolescents Psychiatry and Psychology of the Hospital Clinic Universitari of Barcelona. She has been involved in clinical, therapeutic, genetic, brain imaging and cognitive studies in child psychiatric disorders.

Immaculada Baeza (MD, PhD) is a child and adolescent psychiatrist. Her PhD thesis was on schizophrenia and pHVA changes with risperidone. She is specialized in schizophrenia in adolescents.

Luisa Lazaro (MD, PhD) is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and associated professor of Psychiatry (Barcelona University). Her areas of expertise include obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar and schizophrenic disorders. She is director of the inpatient and day hospital units for child psychiatry.

Astrid Morer (MD, PhD) is child and adolescent psychiatrist. Her PhD thesis was on autoimmune abnormalities in obsessive-compulsive disorders. She is also specialized in Conduct disorders in adolescents.

Itziar Flamarique (MD) is a child and adolescent psychiatrist. She is involved in a European Project about Suicidality in children and adolescents and in other projects associated with Schizophrenia and Anorexia Nervosa treatment.
