Description of organisation

The UPC-KULeuven is a University psychiatric Centre, specialized in top-level clinical care and part of the neuropsychiatric research department of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. The UPC is headed by Prof. J. Peuskens and Prof. K. Demyttenaere and the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry unit by Prof. M. Danckaerts. Main research topics at the centre are Schizophrenia, Depression, ADHD and Autism. The clinical and research child and adolescent team constitutes of  7 child and adolescent psychiatrists, 14 psychologists and 10 child psychiatry trainees. The child and adolescent psychiatry department consists of 70 inpatient places and a large outpatient unit. More than 800 new patients are seen each year and several hundred are followed over years in the specialist clinics.

Previous experience

The UPC-KULeuven Child and Adolescent Department has been involved in several large scale  multi-centre international pharmacological trials (e.g. Buitelaar et al 2007, Bangs et al. 2008) with Prof. Danckaerts as Principle Investigator.

Profile of staff members

Marina Danckaerts (MD, PhD) is child and adolescent psychiatrist. She is Head of the dept. of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the UPC-KULeuven and professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the KULeuven. She has been involved in several international multi-site medication trials in children and adolescents with ADHD and has published on the epidemiology and treatment of ADHD and the genetics of behaviour problems in childhood.

Jean Steyaert (MD, PhD) is child and adolescent psychiatrist. He is head of the outpatient clinic at the UPC-KULeuven, and professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the KULeuven. He is active in genetic and cognitive studies in autism. He is coordinator of the Leuven Autism research consortium, collaborating with the Boston autism consortium.

Inez Vandenbussche (MD) is a child and adolescent psychiatrist. She is head of the inpatient unit for children and adolescents 5-15 years old.

Lut De Rijdt (MD) is a child and adolescent psychiatrist. She is head of the inpatient unit for adolescents 15-18 years old.

Jurgen Lemiere (PhD) is cognitive psychologist. He completed his PhD on the cognitive precursors of Huntington’s disease and is involved in cognitive studies of ADHD.
