Description of organisation

The University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG) is a leading Dutch institute for medical research. The Department of Psychiatry and the Accare Child and Adolescent Psychiatry University Center (headed by Professor Ruud B. Minderaa) are specialized in top-level clinical care and research in neuropsychiatric disorders such as ADHD, Tourette’s Disorder, Schizophrenia, and Autism Spectrum Disorders. This research is embedded in an interdisciplinary research institute, the Graduate School of Behavioral and Cognitive Neurosciences. As such, research into the efficacy and safety of medication treatment for psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents is on the priority list. The Groningen child and adolescent psychiatry groups have access to over 4600 new child and adolescent patients per year. The clinical and research teams include a total of 25 child and adolescent psychiatrists, 20 senior psychologists, 5 post-docs and 20 trainees.

Previous experience

The Department of Psychiatry of the UMCG has been involved in a number of collaborative studies including medication trials (e.g. Troost et al., 2005; and RADAR study), large epidemiological studies (see www.trails.nl) and NIH sponsored projects on the genetics of ADHD (International Multisite ADHD Genetics – IMAGE, R01MH62873 to Steve Faraone, P.I.). The Head of the Groningen Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Centre (Ruud B. Minderaa) has been initiator and coordinator of the national Knowledge Centre for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, involving all Dutch academic centres and a number of regional centres. The UMCG also has ample expertise in the management/coordination of FP7 Cooperative Projects.
