Description of organization

The University of Ulm is a leading German institute for medical research. The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry/Psychotherapy, headed by Professor Jörg M. Fegert, is specialized in top-level psychiatric treatment and research in neuropsychiatric disorders (e.g. ADHD, Conduct Disorders, Tourette Syndrome, Depression, Eating Disorders).

Research on efficacy and safety of medication treatment for psychiatric disorders in youths associated with ethical questions is a main focus of work. The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry/-Psychotherapy is equipped with 30 inpatient beds distributed in 3 units and 1 day care unit for 10 patients. In our outpatient clinic, we treat around 1700 children and adolescents a year. The team consists of 5 child and adolescent psychiatrists, 8 assistant physicians, 1 educationalist, 3 senior psychologists, 5 psychologists, 5 trainees and 24 research associates (19 psychologists, 3 lawyers, 1 qualified social education worker, 1 biologist).

Previous experience

Jörg M. Fegert has been involved in multi-site international drug trials (e.g. Croonenberghs et al. 2005) and has an expertise on psychopharmacological treatment and research (Vitiello et al, 2004; Fegert et al, 2006).

Profile of staff members

Jörg M. Fegert (MD) is a professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and head of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry of the University of Ulm, Germany. He has been involved in several drug trials in children with Conduct Disorder and ADHD. He is further active in several advisory boards, head of the Commission on Developmental Psychopharmacology of the German Professionals Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the PPI (Pediatric Psychopharm Initiative) of the AACAP, the ethics committee (until 2007) and the research commission of the University of Ulm.

Ferdinand Keller (PhD) is a clinical psychologist. He is specialized in psychometrics and statistical analysis of longitudinal data sets.

Michael Kölch (MD) is a child and adolescent psychiatrist. His areas of expertise include depressive disorders, psychopharmacology and ethical issues.

Andrea Ludolph (MD) is a child and adolescent psychiatrist. She is working in biological research, particularly on ADHD and Tourette syndrome.

Simon Schlanser (PhD) is a psychologist. In addition to PERS, he is involved in the project ‚Clarification and goal-attainment in Swiss juvenile justice and youth welfare institutions’.

Ulrike Schulze (MD) is a child and adolescent psychiatrist. As her co-workers, she was involved in several studies in children with ADHD and ODD. A further field of research interest are eating disorders.

Jacinta Tan (MD PhD) is a child and adolescent psychiatrist who is also a medical ethicist. Her expertise is in empirical ethics research and her special interests are consent, competence and development of autonomy.
